What a great way to demonstrate the power of having a vision, in which every layer of a organisation supports. This brings clarity to each of their daily activities to contribute towards achieving that vision. Easy isn’t it!
If it really was that easy, then why do more and more companies fail to achieve their vision? Before I answer that lets answer some key questions:
What is a VISION?
- It is like a photograph depicting your future business.
- It gives the team a sense of direction and a place to travel to.
- It creates a sense of purpose.
- They can be created for all levels of an organization.
- It will give you the inspiration and targeted direction that you and your team need.
Why is a VISION important?
- Without a vision, your team or business will lack motivation to keep going.
- If you do not aim for anything, you might not hit anything. The more specific and clear you are, the better your chances are at seeing your vision turn into reality.
- It provides long-term direction and guidance, but it also gives you the inspiration and the necessary energy to keep going when you feel lost.
What are the problems a VISION can solve?
- People don’t always seem to be working to a common purpose.
- Members of your team don’t see how their contributions are useful or needed.
Businesses today spend a lot of time and money crafting the ‘perfect vision’ to rally the troops towards a destination for the overall business, but these can often get lost in translation or be deemed so far away from the day-to-day roles of people, that they find it difficult to understand how they can contribute.
This results in some of the challenges from above.
To overcome this I encourage you to consider 5 things:
- Why is the vision important for the business?
- How can the Senior Leaders support the vision, & what do they need to do different?
- How can the Team Leaders support the vision, & what do they need to do different?
- How can the Teams support the vision, & what do they need to do different?
- How can you communicate these things in a meaningful way to each layer of the organisation REGULARLY?
Visions and Values are often used as corporate wallpaper, but ultimately it is what people do when nobody is looking that is key to understand. I think it is so important to understand that truth is observed and not spoken, especially if those words are just plastered over your walls. It is what your people do that is key to achieving your vision, and to get people to do different things they need to think differently and this comes from engaging them, aligning them and communicating regularly.
